1836 6/14/1836 Two men representing the United States government arrive to negotiate for United States' recognition of the independence of the Republic of Texas. 

1836 7/11/1836 United States President Andrew Jackson orders General Gaines to cross the Sabine River into Texas to prevent Mexico from causing boundary unrest by interfering with the Indians. 

1836 8/9/1836 Stephen F. Austin in a letter of August 9th, gives his consent to be a candidate for the Texas presidency.

1836 8/15/1836 Sam Houston is nominated for President of Republic of Texas.

1836 8/20/1836 Sam Houston is nominated for the presidency of the Republic of Texas at Columbia. 

1836 8/26/1836 The Allen Brothers purchase the town site for the future city of Houston. 

1836 8/30/1836 The city of Houston is established by the Allen Brothers.

1836 9/5/1836 Sam Houston is elected President of the Republic of Texas.

1836 10/3/1836 Texas Congress assembles for the first time in Colombia, the capital of Texas. 

1836 10/22/1836 Sam Houston is inaugurated as the first elected president of the Republic of Texas. 

1836 11/15/1836 Texas patriot Lorenzo de Zavalla dies.

1836 11/18/1836 President Houston is authorized by the Congress of the Republic to issue bonds of the Republic. These bonds are to be in sums of a minimum of $1,000, up to an amount not exceeding $5,000,000. 

1836 11/25/1836 Santa Anna is released to be dispatched to Washington, D.C. 

1836 11/30/1836 Congress of the Republic selects the city of Houston as the capital of the Republic of Texas. 

1836 12/10/1836 The converse of the Republic of Texas adopts a seal and a standard. 

1836 12/19/1836 The Texas Congress declares the Rio Grande River as the southern boundary of the Republic of Texas. 

1836 12/26/1836 After eight days in Washington, Santa Anna boards the ship furnished by President Andrew Jackson, and leaves the United States. He has been a prisoner of Texas since the Battle of San Jacinto, and is now headed for Vera Cruz. 

1836 12/27/1836 Stephen F. Austin, at 43 years, dies at Columbia, Texas. 

1837 1/26/1837 The steamship 'Laura' successfully navigates up the Buffalo Bayou, but due to dense vegetation, misses the new city of Houston.

1837 1/27/1837 The steamboat 'Laura' arrives at her Houston landing destination, to become the first Steamboat to navigate Buffalo Bayou.

1837 3/3/1837 Republic of Texas officially is recognized by U.S. President Andrew Jackson and Congress.

1837 4/1/1837 Houston becomes the capital of the Republic of Texas. 

1837 4/25/1837 Mexican prisoners from the Texas Revolution are released in Liberty, Texas.

1837 4/26/1837 John J. Audubon arrives at Texas to study bird-life, and to paint birds for his famous work.

1837 5/7/1837 The Schooner Byron, the first merchant vessel to arrive in Texas from the United States, arrives in Houston on May 7th.

1837 5/26/1837 The Texas Congress passes a law against gambling in Texas. 

1837 6/12/1837 The first Texas poll tax is collected. 

1837 8/5/1837 Publication makes known the incorporation of the city of Houston.
